Body Shaming and Social Media

As I was scrolling down my news feed this morning I saw an article on Huffington Post titled Kim Kardashian Says Body Shaming is the Reason She Doesn’t Smile. The article explained that she no longer smiles for the media because of the way she was treated and portrayed during her first pregnancy. She was ridiculed for her outfit choices, called fat, told that she was going to get dumped and all kinds of absurd things. The media turned a time that is meant to be joyous, and beautiful into something ugly. So because of that, she has chosen to no longer share a smile with the media.

“These are the same people that made fun of me, and posted the stories that were so awful, calling me fat for something I couldn’t control. I don’t want to smile for them.”

From this article it got me thinking, yes she is a celebrity and it was her decision to be in the public eye, but no one deserves to be treated that way famous or not. During a pregnancy people gain weight everyone knows that, it’s not rocket science. Or just in life in general no one is perfect. The average size for a woman in America is size 14. When I hear that, it kind of makes me reflect, because that isn’t portrayed in mainstream media. And “plus size” is a broad term.

I don’t understand why it is so hard to just embrace all body shapes and why it is acceptable to put others down because they look different or because they don’t fit the norm. If there were more body positivity in the world it could alleviate so many issues. As a society we should learn to lift each other up, not tear each other apart and if we can do that, the world we live in would be a much happier, body positive place! 🙂
