  1. Help business

Social media provides a great opportunity for business to promote the brand and attract more customers. By uploading new product pictures online, customers can have the first hand information and interact with the business. For example, many businesses use Instagram as one of their promotional tools. When businesses upload picture on Instagram, followers will like the photo and leave the comments. These comments and likes can help business know the effectiveness of the products and interact with users. Another benefit of using social media is to help business reduce the marketing costs. Some of the social media is free, so the business can expand it customer base and promote the merchandise for free (Ali, 2015).

  1. Unite people all over the world

Social media enable people from all over the world interact with each other through different ways, such as videos, photos, and audio (Whiteman, 2015). With social media, people can know the news and events from all over the world by using their cell phone or tablets. Foreign students can video chat with their parents and friends through WeChat video.

  1. Convenience communication

Social media remove communication barriers (Parrack, 2012). For example, people can use Facebook messages to text each other about the group project instead of face-to-face meeting. It works perfectly if all of the group members have different time schedules.

  1. Cyber-bullying

Social media is a useful tool for kids that can help them know more information from the world, but it’s also dangerous for them if inappropriately used. Because everyone can access the Internet, especially adolescents, they may bully each other and cause serious consequences. According to the research, more than 40% of students said that they experienced cyber-bullying in their lifetime (Patchin, 2015). 80% of teens use Facebook, and 54% of those experienced cyber-bullying (“Social Media Bullying”, 2016).

  1. Privacy

Although social media provides people a convenient way to interact, privacy is the biggest problem when people use it. Some social media encourage users to fill in their personal information and promise the users that their information is secure. However, because of the huge benefits attraction, some companies may sell the users information. Therefore, privacy becomes a potential risk of using social media. Also, because people are “more public about their personal lives”, some criminal behavior happened (Jung, n.d.). Recently, Kim Kardashian was robbed of jewelry which worth at least nine million dollars (Nossiter & Paton, 2016). A police spokeswomen said, “It was really the celebrity who was targeted, with possessions that had been seen and noticed via social media, and it was these goods that the attackers targeted” (Yee, 2016).
