Trump Supporters Offer to Give Up Women’s Right to Vote

The Hashtag #RepealThe19th Went Viral Last Week

By Kayla Whatley

Last week, after a national poll showed that Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump by a range of 5 to 11 percent, FiveThirtyEight posted two charts. The first chart showed what it would look like if only women voted, and the second showed what it would look like if only men voted in the 2016 presidential election.

After FiveThirtyEight’s Editor-In-Chief Nate Silver tweeted both of the charts, Trump supporters reacted fast and the hashtag #RepealThe19th started trending on Wednesday, October 12. Yes, Trump supporters actually wanted to repeal the 19th amendment, the one that gave women the right to vote not even 100 years ago, just so that Donald Trump would have a better shot at winning the presidential election.

Shockingly enough, even FEMALE Trump supporters tweeted that they would give up their voting rights if that meant Trump would be the next president of the United States.

Yes, the screenshot of that last tweet where a woman tweeted that she would give up her right to vote, something that women worked very hard to achieve, is real. Thankfully, there was also a lot of backlash in response to this trending topic.

This trend occurred at the worst time, right after the recorded tape of Trump saying very inappropriate things about women. Which led to multiple women coming out and saying Trump sexually assaulted them, which Trump denied, of course.

Women actually losing their right to vote is outrageous and very unrealistic, but it is still a terrifying thought to think that hundreds of people voiced their opinion basically saying that women are not equal to men and do not deserve the right to vote in the 2016 presidential election. It’s scary to know that many people, and many more that just did not tweet, still think that way in 2016.
