Social media world changes every minute and new social media platform come out every single day. Facebook and Twitter are two leading social media platforms in the past few years. With the technological development, many new social media platforms enter our lives and catch our attention. Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and Pinterest are top four most popular social media platforms in 2016 (“Top 15 Most”, 2016). However, more and more social networks join the competition and want to win a place. Here are some social media apps that could rival with these most popular apps in 2016:
Peach attracts tons of attentions this year, and the app is developed by the co-founder of Vine. Peach uses some “magic words” to engage its users. For example, users can draw a picture by typing “Draw” and use “song” to share whatever is playing now. Peach combines Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Spotify, and Slack into one app and gives users a unique mobile experience. The Peach app will also prompt users with a question to answer when they are not sure of what to write (Olanoff, 2016). Users can also watch their friends’ real-time updates, just like Snapchat. Peach is a new, simple, and fun way to keep in touch with friends and be yourself (Davies, 2016).
- Yik Yak
This app allows you to share your location and communicate with people around you. Within the app, users can use the hashtag, Yak & reply, chat with each other, and discover interesting things around them. Moreover, users can share their thoughts with people nearby them. This is actually a very popular app among younger generation, especially students and campuses (Allsopp, 2016). Users can also upvoted the posts they like, and these interesting posts will appear on the top of the feed. Yik Yak is a great way to make new friends, especially when people move into a new place, but it also leads some privacy and safety concerns.
This app is similar to Snapchat. Shots users can use the front camera to snap several selfies or videos and share with friends. “The Shots are VHS-style with a time stamp included, which adds a fun retro touch” (Allsopp, 2016). The app is designed without the commenting function because the developers want to avoid cyber-bullying, so the app is simply “a scrolling wall of selfies” (Allsopp, 2016). This is the best app for users and their friends to share photos and videos in a safe web environment (“7 Cool New”, 2016). The app also fits in the Apple Watch.
