Digital Addiction

Social media takes up most of our living days, and most of us cannot live without it, especially for the younger generation. When you go to the restaurant or a bar, you will see most of the people have their cell phones on their hand and they do not talk to each other. Addicted to social media causes many problems, such as cyber bullying, criminal activities, and lack of interpersonal skills. Some employers said younger generation gets distracted by their cellphone more often than other generations. In the workplace, they always pick up their phones and login to their social media platforms to see if there are any updates. Not only workers but also celebrities are “victims” of social media. Justin Bieber has deleted his Instagram account in August because of the negative comments people made under his Instagram pictures (Blistein, 2016). Recently, Kendall Jenner also deleted her Instagram account. She said “I just wanted to detox, I just wanted a little bit of a break. I would wake up in the morning and look at it first thing, I would go to bed and it would be the last thing I looked at. I felt a little too dependent on it so I wanted to take a minute” (Cratofil, 2016).

Sometimes social media makes all of us getting “crazy” and we did not even notice it. When we travel with family, we stay on the phone rather than talking with them. When you want to throw your phone or these social media away and want to take a break from it, you will find that you cannot live without them after five minutes. When we wake up, the first thing is checking cell phone. When we go to sleep, the last thing is also checking the cell photo. We rely too much on these electronic devices and we need to distract attention from the digital world to real world activities. We should have more communication with our friends and families and share the time with them in person. The actress in Black Mirror said, “In this world, we are all so caught up in our own hands, it is easy to lose sight of what is real” (Black Mirror, 2016). We rely on social media because we fear of missing out something. If you try “digital detox” for several days, you will find the things you missed are actually not that “necessary” in the life, but what matters is the precious time you stay with the real world.
