The other day when I got to my boyfriend’s house, his mom told his little sisters to do get their homework finished. They both grabbed there iPads and started fiddling with them, I looked at them and said “You guys better not let her see you playing games”. It wasn’t until they looked at me like I was dumb and showed me their homework on an app that I realized iPads were the new resource for textbooks, workbook, and notebooks. They went on to show me how homework comes in forms of games now and sharing notes is as easy as a click a away.
Now, I realize this technology has revolutionized since 2010 in grade schools but its all news to me. Keep in mind I am a 23-year-old senior, I wasn’t even aware online textbooks existed until my freshman year of college. High school for me was more like my backpack ripping because of how heavy my textbooks were, sneaking text messages on my Nokia in between bathroom breaks. As I look at my boyfriends 11-year-old sister, I’m amazed (and confused) at how excited she is to go to school. It seems as if schools are taking a more modern morale driven curriculum instead of a more traditional route but is it working?
“A study from KIPP Academy in Houston, TX showed the percentage of students who rated either proficient or advanced (the ‘passing’ rate) was 49% percent higher in the ‘flipped classrooms’ using the iPads than in the traditional classrooms with no iPads” (TUAW)
BBC Active talks about the uses technology brings to education like time efficiency, communication resources, immediate feedback, interactive tools, class blogs, and flexibility in teaching methods. As I do more and more research on this subject, most of the negative feedback is coming from concerns behind things like handwriting skills and the cost of breakages. One thing we need to realize is that essentially, schools are preparing kids for the future because technology is only going to get more advanced from here and WE can’t even figure out how to use Hootsuite.
