I came across an article titled, 5 Social Media Trends That Will Dominate 2017, and I thought this was a very important that people keep up and know what social media trends will be popular so that they can use them to their advantage. In the article, the 5 social media trends that will dominate 2017 are (1) Social Messaging, (2) the fight against fake news, (3) authentic content (live video), (4) Augmented Reality, and (5) Chatbots (5 Social Media Trends That Will Dominate 2017). I’m going to be talking about each of these individually.
Social messaging is exactly what it sounds like and is already being used by some but definitely not as popular as texting. Millennial social media users would be the ones to make this popular because the primary way Millennials communicate is by texting. Businesses could take advantage of this by allowing users to contact them through a social messaging app about their product, for instance. Social messaging could vastly impact customer service.
The Fight Against Fake News
Fake News has become a hot topic due to the recent election. Since a lot of people get the news from social media, it can be hard to differentiate what’s real and what’s not. To fix this problem, the article suggests that news outlets that use social media should be more transparent to consumers but is it simple (5 Social Media Trends That Will Dominate 2017)? Another article suggested that as a consumer you should seek out fake news and flag articles or sites that contain fake news (Solutions That Can Stop Fake News Spreading). This one is a little difficult since it’s such a current issue.
Authentic Content or live video has definitely changed social media. Live video is a very popular feature on social media already. Social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have all adopted the live video feature. I see a lot of influencers using live video as a way to keep their fans updated. Additionally, some companies use it as well to showcase new products or to show behind the scenes footage.
Augmented reality is a relatively new technology. Most people know augmented reality through Pokémon Go. Augmented reality makes it so you can see things on your screen that are not in the natural world. However, it’s not just being used for games. Augmented reality is also being utilized in the store setting. Some stores have adapted augmented reality to help customers find products or to give out store promotions.
Chatbots are a new integration into technology. So, what are they? “Chatbots are a kind of artificial intelligence that can have a conversation with someone” (5 Social Media Trends That Will Dominate 2017). In my opinion, Chatbots are more useful to business for customer service and are already being used for customer service. Chatbots are a great way to enhance the customer service experience for consumers and will definitely continue to be a very useful technology.
Let me know what you think. Do you think these will be prominent trends in 2017 or not?
