History Behind Hashtags: What makes them so unique? By: Lauren France

Today I’m going to be talking about tone of the most commonly used features on social media. Yes, the Hashtag. Hashtags are used on Twitteimages.jpegr, Instagram and Facebook. They were created in order to find trends, or make something able to go viral. Hashtags are used by people all around the world, and those people can then find other topics related to what they are interested in. I’m going to start by showing where they are used, how they were created, and what makes it so useful for social media in the 21st century.

The first Hashtag ever created was by Chris Messina, who is a social media expert. He used the Hashtag “barcamp” in August of 2007 on Twitter in order to test the effectiveness of the concept all-together. After this, they began to take off and more than 75% of social media users use Hashtags today. There are five social media sites that use Hashtag, which include; Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Tumblr. There are some that are more common than others, but that also has to do with the fact that there are constantly more posts on some social media platforms opposed to others.Hashtag-1.jpg

The most common place to find a Hashtag is twitter. Whether it is an already trending Hashtag, or just one your make up, you can often find other tweets with the same Hashtag or a similar one. They are very useful to find information, and are also seen for recreational purposes alone. The next most common social media site to find a Hashtag on is Instagram. Although Instagram was created for pictures alone, when the account creates a Hashtag they can also find other pictures that are similar or were taken at the same location.
